What Affects SMD LED Price? The Factors Behind Every Quote
Quick answer: SMD LED price is driven by chip grade, bonding wire material, brightness/color bin, package type, order volume and customization. Two quotes can differ 2-3x because they are not quoting the same part.
The Six Price Drivers
- Chip grade: A-grade epitaxial chips cost more and deliver tighter Vf and brightness spread.
- Bonding wire: 99.99% pure gold wire vs copper or alloy — reliability and price both follow.
- Bin tightness: a narrow brightness/CCT bin means lower yield, higher price — and uniform panels.
- Package: ceramic and high-power packages cost more than standard PLCC.
- Volume: price breaks at reel multiples and program volumes.
- Customization: special wavelengths, formed leads or private labels add NRE or unit cost.
Making Quotes Comparable
Send every bidder the same one-page spec: package, wavelength/CCT bin, brightness bin at test current, viewing angle, wire material, quantity and reel size. The quotes become comparable — and the "cheap" outliers usually reveal what they omitted.
Total Cost View
A slightly cheaper LED that fails at reflow or drifts in color costs far more in rework and returns than it saves. Price the part plus the risk.
