How to Request LED Samples: Get the Right Parts the First Time
Quick answer: a useful sample request names the exact package, color/wavelength bin, brightness bin and lens — then you test the samples on your real PCB with your real process before approving.
What to Include in the Request
- Package and dimensions (e.g. 0603, 5mm round, 5050).
- Color: dominant wavelength range, or CCT + bin for white.
- Brightness bin and test current if you know them — or describe the application.
- Lens/beam: water-clear, diffused, viewing angle.
- Quantity: 20-50 pcs covers evaluation plus assembly trials.
What to Test on Arrival
- Electrical: Vf at your drive current; brightness vs the datasheet bin.
- Process: run them through your actual reflow or hand-solder profile, then re-test.
- Optical: in the real housing/light pipe, viewed from real angles.
Keep the Paper Trail
Label the golden samples, record the bin codes on the sample bag, and reference them in the purchase order. "Same as approved sample, bin K2" prevents most disputes.
