5mm LED Bulk Buying Guide: Specs That Prevent Costly Mistakes

Quick answer: bulk 5mm LED orders go wrong on unspecified details — wavelength, brightness bin, viewing angle, lens type, lead length and packaging. Fix all six in writing and approve samples before volume.

The Six Specs

  • Color: dominant wavelength range, or CCT + bin for white.
  • Brightness: mcd bin at a stated test current (usually 20 mA).
  • Viewing angle: 15°, 30°, 60° or diffused wide-angle — this changes perceived brightness dramatically.
  • Lens: water-clear vs diffused; straw-hat and flat-top shapes change the angle.
  • Leads: standard ~26 mm, or specify cut/formed leads for your assembly.
  • Packaging: bulk bags vs ammo pack; ESD-safe packing for sensitive bins.

Volume Pricing Logic

Price breaks come at reel/bag multiples and order volume, but the cheapest quote often hides lower chip grades or copper wire. Ask explicitly: chip grade, wire material (gold vs copper-alloy), and epoxy quality.

Incoming Inspection

On first lots: sample-test Vf and brightness with a constant-current source, check lead solderability, and compare against the approved golden sample.
