How to Buy 0603 LEDs: Specifying Package, Bin and Reel Correctly

Quick answer: a comparable 0603 LED quote needs five specs — color (wavelength or CCT), brightness bin, viewing angle, test current, and reel quantity. "0603 red LED" alone invites mismatched quotes.

1. Confirm the Package

0603 imperial = 1.6 × 0.8 mm (1608 metric). Check height too — 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm variants exist. Match the pad footprint in the datasheet, not just the code.

2. Specify Color Precisely

For single colors give the dominant wavelength range (e.g. red 620-625 nm); for white give CCT and chromaticity bin. "Red" alone spans visibly different shades.

3. Lock the Brightness Bin

mcd ratings differ at different test currents. Specify both: e.g. "180-300 mcd bin at 20 mA" — and keep one bin per product.

4. Viewing Angle and Lens

Standard top-view 0603 is ~120°. If the LED feeds a light pipe or sits behind a window, say so — lens choice changes the result.

5. Reel and Packaging

0603 ships on tape and reel (typically 3,000-4,000 pcs per reel). Confirm the MSL level and baking requirements for your assembly process.
