White LED Color Mismatch: CCT, Binning and How to Get Consistent White
Quick answer: "white" LEDs span warm to cool shades. Consistent appearance requires specifying a chromaticity bin (ANSI quadrangle or MacAdam step), not just a CCT number like 6000 K.
Why Whites Differ
White LEDs are blue dies plus phosphor; small phosphor and die variations shift the output color. "6000 K" from two lots can look clearly different because CCT alone does not define the shade — position on the chromaticity diagram does.
Binning Systems
- CCT range bins (e.g. 5700-6500 K): basic, wide tolerance.
- ANSI C78.377 quadrangles: industry-standard regions per CCT.
- MacAdam ellipses: 3-step bins are barely visible differences; 5+ steps show on side-by-side indicators.
Getting Consistent White
- Specify CCT and chromaticity bin (or MacAdam step) in the purchase order.
- Single-lot, single-bin supply for any product with adjacent whites.
- Fix the drive current — phosphor conversion shifts slightly with current and temperature.
- Match the lens/diffuser: epoxy tint changes perceived color.
