LED Flickering: Causes and Fixes for Indicator and Lighting Circuits
Quick answer: LED flicker is almost never the LED itself. Look for a loose solder joint, an unstable supply or driver ripple, and PWM dimming below ~200 Hz that the eye can see.
Cause 1: Intermittent Connections
A cracked joint or oxidized contact flickers with vibration or temperature. Tap the board gently while powered — if flicker follows touch, rework the joints.
Cause 2: Supply or Driver Ripple
Measure the LED current with a scope or True-RMS meter. Ripple above a few percent causes visible shimmer on camera even when the eye misses it. Add capacitance or fix the failing driver stage.
Cause 3: PWM Frequency Too Low
Below roughly 200 Hz the eye perceives PWM dimming as flicker; cameras catch it even higher. Raise the PWM frequency above 1 kHz for comfortable, camera-safe dimming.
Cause 4: Current at the Knee
An LED run at a tiny fraction of its test current (or a 3.3 V rail driving a 3.2 V white LED) sits where small voltage changes swing current widely — brightness jitters. Re-size the resistor or use a constant-current stage.
Cause 5: Thermal Intermittents
Flicker that appears only warm points to a cracked bond wire or a marginal joint expanding with heat. Thermal cycling or freeze spray helps localize it.
