2026 Complete LED Lamp Bead Model & Parameter Guide (8 Package Series + Selection Chart)
How many LED lamp bead models are there?By packaging technology they fall into eight major series: SMD (0201–5730), through-hole DIP (2–10mm), high-power Luxeon-style (1–10W), COB integrated light sources (3–500W), addressable RGB (including WS2812B with built-in IC), automotive CSP, special sources such as IR/UV, plus custom series from various manufacturers. Compiled by Hongcheng Optoelectronics (August 2026), this guide summarizes 150+ mainstream models across the eight series with key parameters — size, power, voltage, current, luminous flux — drawn from public industry datasheets and manufacturer documents. Use it as a quick-reference manual for engineering selection and procurement comparison.

6. Addressable RGB LED (5050RGB / WS2812B / SK6812)

10. LED Lamp Bead FAQ
What is the voltage of an LED lamp bead?
The operating voltage (forward voltage, Vf) is determined by the chip material: roughly 1.8–2.4V for red, orange, yellow and yellow-green; 2.8–3.6V for blue, green, white and violet. Even within one model there are voltage bins, so for volume production follow the manufacturer's binning report. Never drive a single bead directly from a 5V or 12V supply without a current-limiting resistor.
What is the difference between 0603 and 0805 beads?
0603 measures 1.6×0.8mm with typical power of 0.06–0.1W; 0805 measures 2.0×1.25mm at 0.1–0.15W — brighter, with a more forgiving soldering window. Choose 0805 when space allows; use 0603 for high-density boards. For a detailed comparison see our article "How to Choose 0805 LEDs: Size, Voltage and Colors Explained".
SMD LED vs through-hole LED — which is better?
Neither is universally better — it depends on process and application. SMD suits automated assembly, is compact and consistent, and dominates consumer electronics. Through-hole DIP resists mechanical stress, is easy to repair and offers more viewing-angle options, suiting displays, signal lights and low-volume hand soldering. At equal brightness the two cost about the same, so let your production process drive the decision.
How do I calculate the series resistor for an LED?
Formula: R = (supply voltage − forward voltage) ÷ target current. Example: a 12V supply driving a white 5mm bead with Vf=3.2V at 20mA gives R=(12−3.2)÷0.02=440Ω; use a standard 470Ω, ≥0.25W resistor. See the full quick chart in "How to Calculate Series Resistors for LED Indicators".
Can an LED really last 50,000 hours?
50,000 hours is the theoretical lumen-maintenance life (L70) at ideal junction temperature. Real-world life depends on thermal design: every 10°C rise in junction temperature roughly halves the lifespan. High-power and COB devices must have adequate heatsinking, while low-power indicators run within rated current commonly last a decade.
Why must high-power LEDs have a heatsink?
About 70% of the electrical energy fed into a high-power LED becomes heat rather than light. Once junction temperature exceeds 120°C, permanent lumen depreciation or dead LEDs follow. Beads above 1W should be mounted on aluminum PCB; above 3W the heatsink area must be calculated; COB and high-power Luxeon-style parts also require thermal grease and attention to structural thermal resistance.
What parameters are needed for custom LEDs?
Please specify: package model (or dimensional drawing), color/wavelength (CCT for white), voltage and current, brightness or luminous intensity, viewing angle, lens type (clear/diffused), lead length or pad requirements, plus any special environment (high temperature, sulfur exposure, outdoor UV). Hongcheng supports customization from drawings or samples, with 3D samples available for confirmation.
How can I judge LED quality?
Four quick checks: 1) Inspect bonding wire and leadframe (gold wire beats alloy wire; copper leadframe beats iron); 2) measure voltage consistency (tighter distribution within a batch is better); 3) light them up to check color uniformity (no dark spots, no color shift); 4) run aging samples (48 hours at high temperature and humidity to check decay). For volume purchases, ask the manufacturer for LM-80 or aging test data.
