0805 LED Diodes: Size, Voltage Parameters, and Color Options Explained
Anyone who works on hardware has probably been through this: that tiny status light on the board looks insignificant, but when it comes to selection you realize there is a lot to consider — is it bright enough, easy to solder, consistent across batches? Overlooking any of these can cause problems later. The 0805 LED diode is the "workhorse size" among SMD indicators: slightly larger than 0603 and easier to solder, smaller than 1206 and more board-space-friendly — which is why you see it everywhere on power boards, industrial control boards, and instrument panels. This article covers 0805 diode dimensions, electrical parameters, color options, and purchasing tips in one place.
What Exactly Is the Size of an 0805 LED Diode?
0805 is an imperial package name, meaning 0.08 inches long by 0.05 inches wide, which converts to roughly 2.0mm × 1.25mm in metric — that's why some documents also call it the 2012 package. Thickness generally ranges from 0.6mm to 1.1mm depending on the lens shape: flat-top versions are thinner, while domed versions with a lens are thicker.
Numbers alone don't give you a feel for it; a side-by-side comparison of common SMD packages makes it clear:
| Package | Imperial Size | Metric Size (approx.) | Hand-Soldering Difficulty | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0402 | 0.04×0.02 in | 1.0×0.5mm | Very hard — machine placement only | Phones, earphones, extreme-space designs |
| 0603 | 0.06×0.03 in | 1.6×0.8mm | Difficult, but possible for skilled hands | Chargers, small appliance indicators |
| 0805 | 0.08×0.05 in | 2.0×1.25mm | Moderate, repair-friendly | Power boards, industrial equipment status lights |
| 1206 | 0.12×0.06 in | 3.2×1.6mm | Easy | Instruments, panel indication |
In short: if board space is tight, choose 0603 or even 0402; if you want worry-free soldering and repair with a bit more brightness, 0805 is the well-balanced choice.

Voltage and Current Parameters of 0805 LED Diodes
The 0805 is a low-power SMD diode with a standard drive current of 20mA. One point deserves special attention: different emitting colors use different chip material systems, and forward voltage (VF) varies considerably — so don't apply a single rule of thumb when calculating the current-limiting resistor.
| Emitting Color | Chip System | Forward Voltage VF (Typical Range) | Recommended Current |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red, orange, yellow | AlGaInP | 1.8V–2.4V | 20mA |
| Yellow-green | GaP | 1.9V–2.4V | 20mA |
| Pure green, blue, white | InGaN | 2.8V–3.4V | 20mA |
For example: on the same 12V rail, a red diode works out to a ~500Ω current-limiting resistor; switch to a blue diode with a 3V VF and the resistor becomes ~450Ω. Before mass production, always work from the typical values in the manufacturer's datasheet rather than guessing from experience.
Single Color, Dual Color, or Addressable RGB?
The 0805 size comes in many variants. Single-color versions suit power and run indicators — one light, one status, simple and direct. If the panel needs to show two states like "charging/fully charged" or "normal/fault," consider a dual-color version: red and green chips in one package, one lamp doing the work of two. Hongcheng Optoelectronics' 0805 dual-color SMD LED diode is exactly this type of part, available in common-cathode or common-anode to match your control circuit. For chasing or breathing effects, there is also the 0807 addressable RGB series with a built-in IC, controllable over a single wire.
While selecting, also confirm the viewing angle: standard 0805 diodes have a ~120° beam angle, suitable for directly viewed panels; if you need light pipes or side-emitting output, look at side-view packages instead.
What to Watch When Buying 0805 LED Diodes
First, brightness binning. For the same model, brightness can differ noticeably between bins — and it shows when several lamps sit side by side on a panel. Confirm with the manufacturer which bin will be supplied before ordering.
Second, wavelength and chromaticity consistency. Red wavelength normally falls between 620–630nm, but if batches shift from lot to lot, the color mismatch is obvious on a panel. Reputable manufacturers sort by 2.5nm or 5nm steps.
Third, internal process. Chip grade and gold-wire versus alloy-wire bonding directly affect lumen depreciation and lifespan — don't cut costs here for indicators that stay powered for years.
Fourth, packaging and moisture protection. SMD components are moisture-sensitive; once the reel is opened, unused parts must be baked and dry-stored per spec, or they will fail during reflow soldering.
