Indicator LED Supplier Checklist: From Panel Indicators to PCB Status Lights
Quick answer: indicator sourcing fails when buyers spec a bare LED but need an assembly — decide first whether you need a board-level LED, a panel-mount indicator, or an LED plus holder/light pipe combination, then qualify the supplier accordingly.
Step 1: Define the Level of Assembly
- Bare device: 3mm/5mm through-hole or SMD LED soldered to your PCB.
- Device + holder: LED in a panel-mount holder for clean front-panel mounting.
- Device + light pipe: SMD LED on the board, light pipe carries light to the panel.
Step 2: Fix the Optical Spec
- Color conventions: red = fault/alarm, green = run/OK, amber = warning, blue/white = status.
- Viewing angle matched to how the panel is read: wide diffused for close viewing, narrow clear for distance.
- Brightness appropriate to ambient light — indoor office and outdoor sunlit panels differ 10x.
Step 3: Supplier Questions
- Can you supply LED + holder + light pipe as matched parts?
- Per-die binning for multi-color panels?
- Lead forming for vertical/horizontal panel alignment?
