Diffused vs Clear LED: Which Lens Type Should You Choose?
Quick answer: choose diffused LEDs when the viewer looks at the indicator itself from any angle; choose water-clear (transparent) LEDs when you need maximum on-axis brightness or a defined beam, e.g. into a light pipe or across a distance.

Selection Rules
- Panel indicator viewed directly: diffused — readable from the side, no glare.
- Light pipe input: wide-angle diffused feeds pipes more evenly; clear only with texture/gap compensation.
- Long viewing distance / daylight: clear, narrow beam maximizes visible intensity.
- Backlighting legends: diffused, to avoid seeing the die image through the panel.

mcd numbers are not comparable across lens types: a clear 8000 mcd narrow-beam LED and a diffused 400 mcd wide LED can look equally bright at the panel. Compare viewing angle and test current alongside mcd.
