How to Drive a White LED from 3.3V: What Works and What Fails

Quick answer: a white LED with a typical 3.0-3.2 V forward voltage can run directly from 3.3 V with a small resistor, but there is little headroom. For stable brightness use a low-current white LED, a low-Vf bin, or a boost driver.

Why 3.3 V Is Marginal

White and blue LEDs use InGaN dies with Vf of 2.8-3.4 V. At 3.3 V supply, the resistor drops only 0.1-0.5 V, so small Vf variations cause large current swings — two "identical" LEDs can differ visibly in brightness.

Option 1: Direct Drive (Acceptable for Indicators)

  • Choose parts specified at low test current (2-5 mA) or a low-Vf bin.
  • Size the resistor for the worst-case Vf: R = (3.3 - 2.8) / 0.005 = 100 Ω for 5 mA.
  • Expect brightness variation between boards.

Option 2: Boost / Charge-Pump Driver (Recommended for Uniformity)

A tiny boost or charge-pump LED driver raises the rail to a regulated current (e.g. 5-20 mA constant). Brightness becomes independent of battery voltage — the right choice for battery products and multi-LED designs.

Option 3: Rethink the Color

Red, amber and yellow-green LEDs (Vf 1.8-2.4 V) drive easily from 3.3 V with a standard resistor and are far more forgiving.
