12V/24V LED Indicator Current-Limiting Resistor Guide: Formula & Quick Reference
12V and 24V are the two most common supply rails for equipment indicators (12V automotive, 24V industrial). Connecting an LED directly to these rails destroys it instantly - a series current-limiting resistor is mandatory. This guide gives the formula, a quick-reference table, and the three most common mistakes.
1. The Formula
R = (Vsupply − Vf) ÷ If, with resistor power P = (Vsupply − Vf) × If, derated by at least 2×.
- Vf (forward voltage): red/yellow/orange ≈ 1.8-2.2V; blue/green/white ≈ 2.8-3.4V (check the datasheet);
- If (operating current): 10-15mA recommended for indicators, never above the datasheet maximum (usually 20mA).
2. Quick Reference: 12V / 24V (If = 15mA)

3. The Three Most Common Mistakes
- Calculating at nominal voltage, not maximum: a car charging rail reaches 14.4V and 24V industrial rails can swing to 28V - always check the resistor at maximum rail voltage;
- Sharing one resistor across paralleled LEDs: when one lamp fails, current redistributes and the rest cascade-fail. Every paralleled lamp needs its own resistor;
- Ignoring resistor wattage: a tiny 1/8W resistor in a 24V loop burns first. Start at 0.5W for peace of mind.
