Clear vs Diffused Lens LED Indicators: Beam Angle & Brightness Trade-offs

发布于: 2026-08-18 15:07

Executive Summary: The Lens Decides Where the Light Goes

An LED die emits roughly the same total light regardless of packaging — the lens (epoxy encapsulant) decides how that light is distributed. A water-clear lens focuses light into a narrow, intense beam. A diffused lens scatters the same light over a wide angle, trading peak intensity for readability from any direction. Choosing correctly is the difference between an indicator that dazzles at one angle and one that is visible across the whole room.

Water-Clear Lens: Narrow Beam, Maximum Punch

Clear epoxy forms an optical lens over the die. Standard 5 mm clear LEDs produce viewing angles of 15°–30°, concentrating output so on-axis intensity can reach several candela — even tens of thousands of mcd in high-brightness types. Use clear lens when the viewer looks straight at the indicator: outdoor signage, traffic and signal applications, long-distance status lights, or when shining through a small aperture. Straw-hat clear LEDs widen this to around 120° while keeping high intensity, a popular compromise.

The trade-off: off-axis the indicator nearly disappears, and on-axis it can be uncomfortably glaring at close range.

Diffused Lens: Wide Angle, Soft Appearance

Diffused (milky) epoxy contains scattering particles that spread light to 60°–120° viewing angles. Peak intensity drops to a fraction of the clear version, but the indicator reads clearly from almost any position — essential for control panels, instrument clusters and consumer products viewed from the side. Diffusion also hides the die image, giving a clean uniform glow with no visible hot spot, and reduces glare for operators sitting close to the panel.

Colored Lens Options

Lenses come colorless or color-tinted. A colored diffused lens (red lens over red die) improves contrast in ambient light — the indicator looks colored even when off, and ambient reflections are filtered. A colored transparent lens keeps high intensity while adding off-state color identity. For white LEDs, clear lens is standard since a tinted lens would shift the color point.

Reading the Datasheet: Viewing Angle and mcd

Viewing angle (2θ½) is the full angle at which intensity falls to half its peak. A 20 mA red 5 mm LED might be rated 12,000 mcd at 20° in clear lens, or 800 mcd at 60° in diffused — the diffused part is not dimmer in total output, its light is simply spread over nine times the solid angle. When comparing parts, always compare mcd and viewing angle together, never mcd alone.

Application Selection Guide

Choose clear lens for: outdoor and sunlight-visible indicators, long viewing distances, narrow viewing positions, fiber-style light pipes, maximum intensity from a low drive current.

Choose diffused lens for: indoor control panels, operator-facing equipment, wide viewing positions, multi-LED arrays that must look uniform, applications sensitive to glare.

Choose straw-hat or wide-angle clear when you need both high intensity and a wide cone — common in illumination-flavored indication.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Can I get free LED samples from Hongcheng Optoelectronics?

Yes. Dongguan Hongcheng Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. supports sample testing — you can verify electro-optical parameters, dimensions and soldering compatibility before placing bulk orders. To request samples, call +86 139 2571 4318 (WeChat same number) or email sales@led-hc.com with the model and quantity you need.

2. What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

The MOQ for DIP (through-hole) LEDs is 1K (1,000 pcs); for SMD LEDs the MOQ is 3-5K, shipped in tape-and-reel packaging. The MOQ for customized models (special wavelength, brightness or voltage binning) is confirmed per custom solution. Please contact sales for an accurate quotation and MOQ for your model.

3. What are the lead times for samples and mass production?

Sample lead time is typically 3-4 working days; in-stock samples are usually shipped within 2 working days. Mass production lead time is typically 10-15 working days, confirmed according to order quantity and production schedule — please contact sales for an accurate lead time.

4. Are the products RoHS certified?

Yes. All Hongcheng LED diodes are RoHS and CE certified, made with A-grade chips, 99.9% pure gold wire bonding and high-temperature resistant encapsulant — anti-sulfuration and low light decay, meeting the environmental and reliability requirements of home appliance, automotive and industrial equipment applications.

5. Can voltage, wavelength, brightness or color be customized?

Yes. We support binning and customization of brightness, wavelength, voltage and color, and provide OEM services. Our product range covers 0201-5730 SMD LEDs, addressable RGB LEDs with built-in IC, side-emitting LEDs, and 2mm-10mm DIP LEDs, packed in vacuum moisture-proof tape and reel, suitable for automated SMT mounting and reflow soldering.

6. How do I get the product datasheet?

Every model has an official PDF datasheet (electro-optical parameters, dimensions, pad design, tape packaging and reliability test data) — 259 datasheets in total, all free to download with no login required. Browse the datasheet center (https://www.hc-led168.com/datasheets) by series, or download directly from each product page.

7. Is Hongcheng Optoelectronics a factory or a trading company?
