Side View SMD LED Indicators: 020/1204/3010 Packages for Edge Indication
Executive Summary: Light That Emits Parallel to the Board
A side view SMD LED (also called side-emitting or edge-emitting LED) mounts flat on the PCB but directs its light sideways, parallel to the board surface. This lets the indicator shine through a bezel window, front-panel slot or enclosure edge without light pipes or right-angle through-hole parts. For slim products — handheld terminals, set-top boxes, rack equipment, membrane panels — side view LEDs are often the only practical indication method.
Main Package Options
020 side view — the compact workhorse at roughly 2.1 × 0.6 mm of emitting face. Used where indicator windows are tiny and board space is minimal.
1204 side view LED — a 3.2 × 1.0 mm class package offering higher brightness and easier SMT handling than 020. This is Hongcheng's most requested side view type for industrial keypads and communication equipment.
3010 and 335 side view — mid-power side emitters used for backlighting light guides and icons as well as direct indication.
1206 side view — the robust option for panels and instruments needing a wide, bright edge indication visible at distance.
All are available in red, green, yellow, blue, white and bi-color, with water-clear or diffused lens and viewing angles from 90° to 120°.
Typical Applications
Edge status windows on routers, switches and rack servers; indication through membrane keypads and silicone keypads; side-lit icons in automotive switches and dashboard tell-tales; battery and signal indicators in handheld instruments; card readers and access control panels where the PCB sits perpendicular to the viewing surface.
Design-In Considerations
Alignment: the emitting axis must line up with the panel window. Keep the LED-to-window gap small — light spreading sideways reduces apparent brightness quickly.
Pad design and reflow: follow the recommended land pattern exactly; side view packages have asymmetric pads and are more sensitive to placement rotation than top-view chips. Standard reflow at 260 °C peak applies.
Brightness budgeting: when the LED shines through a tinted or textured window, measure the window's transmission and order a higher brightness bin to compensate. Hongcheng can bin parts to your target mcd range.
Stray light: in dense layouts, add a light baffle or black solder mask around the emitting face to prevent bleed into adjacent windows.
Side View vs Top View: When to Switch
If the panel surface is parallel to the PCB, a standard top-view SMD LED is simpler and cheaper. Switch to a side view package when the panel is perpendicular to the board, when overall product height is constrained, or when a through-hole right-angle LED would consume too much assembly labor. Side view SMD parts go through the same pick-and-place and reflow process as the rest of the board — no secondary hand-soldering step.
