Infrared light-emitting diodes (IR emitter LEDs) and IR receivers only work reliably as a matched pair — wavelength mismatch, wrong carrier frequency and misaligned viewing angles are the three root causes of remote-control failure and short sensing distance. 1. Two Types of IR Receivers — Know the Difference

  • IR receiver modules (IRM, with demodulation IC): built-in amplification, filtering and demodulation; they respond only to a specific carrier frequency (commonly 38kHz). Used in remote controls and appliance receiver windows; strong ambient-light immunity, ready to use.
  • IR photodiodes/phototransistors: convert light to current without demodulation. Used in through-beam and reflective sensing (counting, obstacle avoidance, soap dispensers, automotive sensing); your circuit must provide the amplification.

Rule of thumb: remote-control applications → receiver module; sensing applications → photodiode. Mixing them up is the most common beginner mistake.

2. Three Pairing Essentials: Wavelength, Carrier, Viewing Angle

  • Wavelength match: the emitter's peak wavelength must fall inside the receiver's sensitive band. 940nm is the mainstream for remote control and sensing (good sunlight immunity); 850nm offers higher radiant intensity with a faint red glow visible to cameras, used in night-vision illumination and security. Never mix a 940nm emitter with an 850nm receiver.
  • Carrier frequency (receiver modules only): a 38kHz-rated module requires the transmitter to modulate at the same frequency (variants exist at 36/38/40/56kHz).
  • Viewing angle and distance: a narrower emitter angle (e.g. 20°) concentrates energy for longer range; wide angles (60°+) cover more area at shorter distance. The receiver's angle should cover at least the emitter's footprint.
