LED Customization FAQ (OEM/ODM Service)
For engineers and buyers with non-standard requirements: seven frequent questions covering customizable parameters, process and lead time, MOQ, automotive-grade customization, bi-color/RGB/addressable options, fees, and how to start a project.
Q1. Which LED parameters can be customized?
Short answer: Brightness (same-Bin sorting), wavelength/CCT (±1nm class), forward voltage (±0.05V), viewing angle, lens type (clear/diffused), and polarity (common-cathode/common-anode/non-polarized) are all customizable.
Details: Full-parameter binning covers: ① brightness Bin — >95% within-batch consistency; ② wavelength — ±1nm for mono colors, ±100K-class CCT sorting for white; ③ voltage — ±0.05V bins for parallel-LED consistency; ④ package form — DIP in round/flat/diffused/clear lenses, SMD in side-view (020/1204/335); ⑤ bi-color/tri-color in common-cathode, common-anode or non-polarized; ⑥ special wavelengths — IR 850/940nm, UV 365/395nm, horticultural 660/450nm at ±5nm wavelength accuracy.
Q2. What is the customization process and lead time?
Short answer: Four steps — requirement review (1~2 days) → sample confirmation (3~7 days) → pilot run (1~2 weeks) → volume delivery (typically 7~15 days), with free samples up front.
Details: ① Requirement review: provide target parameters (brightness/wavelength/voltage/angle) or the application plus a reference sample, and our application engineers issue a selection proposal; ② Sampling: free samples with a binning test report; ③ Pilot run: 1~2 reels for on-board validation of soldering and optoelectronic performance; ④ Volume: parameters are archived to lock the Bin, and reorders repeat the archived spec for batch consistency.
Q3. What is the MOQ for customization?
Short answer: SMD customization starts at 3~5K (full reels); standard DIP customization at 10K; special-wavelength or new-material projects are evaluated case by case.
Details: MOQ is driven by line-changeover and binning costs: full SMD reels of 3~5K are the most economical unit; DIP involves more manual/semi-automated steps, hence 10K. For standard colors with parameter-only sorting (e.g. 0805 red binned at ±1nm), lower volumes are negotiable. Contact sales for a project-specific evaluation.
Q4. Can you do automotive-grade customization?
Short answer: Yes — we manufacture custom products benchmarked to automotive-grade standards (gold wire + imported silicone + Ag/Au-plated leadframes + 100% burn-in), cooperate with customers to complete automotive-grade certification, and provide full reliability test data.
Details: The standard automotive custom BOM: pure gold-wire bonding (a well-executed gold-wire bond delivers longer fatigue life than conventional alloy wire), imported silicone (-40~150°C, sulfur-resistant), grade-A dies with full-parameter binning, and 100% high-temperature burn-in (~50ppm early failures). We organize testing around AEC-Q102 items, issue reports, and cooperate with customers or third-party labs through formal certification. For mild environments gold wire alone is sufficient; for automotive or strong thermal cycling, specify gold wire; for high-humidity applications avoid copper or aluminum wire (corrosion risk) — Hongcheng uses no copper or aluminum wire across its lines.
Q5. Can bi-color/RGB/addressable LEDs be customized to my driver design?
Short answer: Yes — bi/tri-color in common-cathode/common-anode/non-polarized; addressable in WS2812B/SK6812-compatible protocols with break-point-continue options, matched to your controller.
Details: ① Bi-color 0603/0805/1204/F5: confirm common cathode vs anode (the circuit design is reversed — always state it when ordering); ② RGB 5mm four-lead: common cathode/anode optional; ③ IC-integrated addressable: single-wire cascade (WS2812B-compatible), dual-wire clocked (APA102-compatible), break-point-continue (WS2813/WS2815 for engineering projects); ④ side-view bi-color 1204 for light-guide plates. Provide drive voltage/protocol/refresh rate and we will return a matching proposal.
Q6. Is customization charged? What about sampling and tooling?
Short answer: Parameter binning on existing models is free and samples are free; projects involving new package forms or dedicated materials are quoted case by case, usually creditable against volume orders.
Details: Parameter binning within the existing 222-model system (brightness/wavelength/voltage/angle/polarity) is a standard service — no customization fee, free samples. All-new package structures or dedicated materials (e.g. special phosphor blends, custom leadframes) require tooling/line-change evaluation, typically refunded or credited after volume production begins. All custom parameters are archived to guarantee long-term reorder consistency.
Q7. How do I start a customization project?
Short answer: Send three pieces of information — the application, target parameters (or a reference sample photo/part number), and estimated annual volume; a proposal comes back within 24 hours.
