LED Sulfurization (Blackening): Causes, Testing & Solutions
In short: LED sulfurization (blackening) is caused by sulfur reacting with the silver plating on the lead frame, forming black silver sulfide (Ag₂S). It typically occurs around sulfur-containing rubber, cardboard packaging, or flux residue. The definitive fix is anti-sulfurization encapsulant plus strict material and storage control.
How does sulfurization happen?
Sulfur-containing substances penetrate through gaps or breathable channels in the encapsulant and react with the silver plating on the lead frame, producing black silver sulfide. Typical sources include:
- Sulfur-containing rubber parts: gaskets, seals, wire insulation (rubber commonly contains sulfur);
- Packaging & storage: ordinary cardboard, acidic paper cards, sulfur-containing desiccants;
- Process residue: poorly cleaned flux, sulfur-bearing solder paste;
- Environment: sulfur-laden industrial air, wooden pallets fumigated with sulfur.
Once an LED blackens from sulfurization, luminous flux can drop by more than 30%, and the damage is irreversible — the only remedy is replacement.
How to tell sulfurization from a burnt LED?
- Appearance: sulfurization shows uniform gray-black darkening; burnt LEDs usually show localized yellowing or cracking;
- Location: sulfurization often starts at the LED edges and the reflector cup;
- Lab test: cross-section plus EDS elemental analysis — detecting sulfur confirms the diagnosis. Third-party labs can issue reports usable for supplier claims.
Solutions (by priority)
| Measure | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Switch to anti-sulfurization encapsulant (imported Japanese system) | Medium | Root fix; dense compound blocks sulfur |
| Replace sulfur-containing rubber parts with silicone | Low | Eliminates the source |
| Use sulfur-free paper cards / vacuum packaging | Low | Blocks storage contamination |
| Re-test after two reflow cycles | Low | Exposes latent risk early |
※ Buying tip: for sulfur-risk scenarios (outdoor, rubber-sealed, industrial areas), choose LEDs explicitly rated "anti-sulfurization, two reflow cycles qualified". All Hongcheng Optoelectronics LEDs use imported Japanese encapsulant — high-temperature resistant, anti-sulfurization, and qualified through two reflow cycles for high-reliability applications.
