How to Choose LED Indicators for EV Charging Stations: Key Selection Points for Outdoor Use

AC charging stations (often called "charging piles" in the industry) are increasingly common in residential garages and business park parking lots. The handful of indicator lights on the unit — power, charging, fault alarm — look insignificant, but they are the user's only window into the charger's status. We have supplied LED diodes to many charging station manufacturers, and the most common problems we see are brightness decay, lens yellowing, and false status alarms after a year or two outdoors. The root cause is usually an incomplete selection decision at the design stage. This article explains how to choose LED indicators for EV charging stations.

What Indicators Does a Charging Station Have?

A standard AC charging station has at least three types of indication on its panel: power/standby, charging status, and fault alarm. Models with card readers or networking add a few more for communication and card status. The industry's common convention: blue or green means normal/charging, red means fault, yellow means warning or waiting — users read the status at a glance.

Charging status switches back and forth, and manufacturers don't want too many holes in the panel, so many use a single red-green dual-color diode for both states. That is why dual-color diodes are so common on charging stations.

Outdoor Conditions Are a Hard Test

Outdoor conditions are far harsher than indoor ones. Four points must be checked during selection:

Temperature. In cold climates the enclosure exterior can drop to -30°C, while under direct summer sun the interior can climb to 60-70°C. The diode's operating range should cover at least -40°C to +85°C, and both the chip and the encapsulation must withstand thermal cycling.

UV exposure. Ordinary epoxy lenses yellow and haze under long-term sun exposure, and brightness drops accordingly. Outdoor diodes need UV-resistant lens material, or physical protection such as shades and light pipes.

Moisture. The enclosure handles overall protection, but the diode leads need quality plating — otherwise moisture wicks in along the leads, corrodes the solder joints, and causes poor contact and flickering.

Brightness. Status must remain visible in daylight. Choose high-brightness models, or use a focusing lens to concentrate the light, adding a light pipe to guide it to the panel surface when necessary.

Through-Hole or SMD? Common Solutions Compared

SolutionCommon ModelsAdvantagesWeaknessesTypical Position
3mm/5mm through-holeF3, F5 round, straw hatHigh brightness, selectable viewing angle, durable, easy to repair and replaceOccupies more space; higher through-hole assembly costDirect panel mounting; common on older station designs

In practice most manufacturers mix approaches: SMD on the main control board, and through-hole or SMD-plus-light-pipe on the panel — whichever the structural design accommodates best.

Why Dual-Color LEDs Are the Standard Choice

One red-green dual-color lamp expresses two states, saving both space and cost. When board space is tight, choose the 0805 dual-color SMD LED diode; for through-hole panel mounting, consider the 5mm round dual-color LED diode. One thing to confirm with the control engineer in advance: dual-color diodes come in common-cathode and common-anode structures, which must match the drive mode of the control I/O — pick the wrong one and it won't light up.

Among single-color through-hole options, the F5 through-hole LED diode is a classic choice for power indication, available in red, green, blue, and yellow, with lead lengths customizable to your structure.

Purchasing Recommendations

Always test samples in a real assembly first — focus on lighting performance after high-low temperature cycling and on daylight visibility, not just the initial brightness on the datasheet. For volume supply, lock the brightness and wavelength bins with the manufacturer; when several lamps sit side by side on a panel, even slight inconsistency is visible to end users. Also remember that indicator diodes stay powered for years — chip grade and wire-bonding process directly determine lumen depreciation three to five years out, so choosing purely on price is not advisable here.
