RoHS and lead-free packaging of LED chips: What to check for export compliance and how to view reports

发布于: 2026-07-31 17:14

Have your LED chips passed RoHS? Is there a report? For customers who place export orders, this is a question we must answer every day. RoHS compliance itself is not difficult, but it is difficult to distinguish between themTrue compliance and paper complianceThe same RoHS report, some are actual tests for this model and batch, while others are PS reports from other sources. If non compliant products are found during EU market supervision inspections, full container load recalls will result in losses in the millions.

This article explains the key points of environmental compliance for LED chips, report verification methods, and the concept of lead-free packaging.

1、 What exactly does RoHS restrict

RoHS (European Union Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) restricts 10 categories of substances, mainly related to lamp beads:

substance limit Risk points in the LED beads
Lead (Pb) 1000 ppm Solder, bracket coating, glass encapsulation
Mercury (Hg) 1000 ppm LED naturally does not contain, different from fluorescent lamps
Cadmium (Cd) 100 ppm Certain fluorescent powders and coatings
Hexavalent chromium (Cr ⁶⁺) 1000 ppm Metal surface treatment
PBB/PBDE 1000 ppm Flame retardants (colloids, PCB related)
4 ortho benzenes (DEHP/BBP/DBP/DIBP) 1000 ppm Colloidal plasticizer

"无铅封装"It is a subset of RoHS compliance, specifically referring to the packaging process that does not use lead containing solder and lead containing materials - LED beads themselves are not soldered (at the factory), while lead-free mainly refers to the bracket coating, solid crystal material, and subsequent solderable coating meeting lead-free requirements, allowing the beads to withstand the high temperature (260 ℃) of lead-free reflow soldering.

2、 Why is lead-free packaging bound to "high temperature resistance"

The peak temperature of reflow soldering with lead solder is about 235 ℃, and the peak temperature of lead-free solder (SAC305) is 250-260 ℃. The lamp beads should not change color, crack glue, or die through lead-free reflow soldering, and the temperature resistance requirements for the glue and bracket should be one level higher:

  • Colloid: High temperature resistant epoxy resin or silicone, 260 ℃/10s three times without yellowing
  • Bracket coating: pure silver or silver alloy coating, lead-free substrate
  • Solid crystal material: lead-free solid crystal adhesive

So 'lead-free packaging' is not only environmentally compliant, but also a side proof of the high temperature resistance of the lamp beads. Lamp beads labeled as "lead-free reflow soldering compatible at 260 ℃" on the specification sheet can be safely installed on lead-free production lines.

3、 How to Check the Authenticity of RoHS Reports: Four Step Verification

1. Check the subject of the reportThe testing report should be issued by a qualified third-party laboratory (SGS, CTI, T Ü V, Intertek, etc.), and the report number can be found on the laboratory's official website.

2. Refer to the sample descriptionThe sample name, model, and photos on the report should be consistent with the purchased lamp beads. Be wary of the saying 'one report covers all models in the factory' - the standard practice is to group testing according to material family, and it is reasonable to share reports for models with the same materials and processes within the group. Cross material system sharing is suspicious.

3. Check the detection methodIt should be XRF screening+chemical confirmation (IEC 62321 series standards), and only the report of XRF initial screening is not convincing enough.

4. Check the dateAfter material or process changes, retesting should be conducted. If the report date exceeds 2-3 years and the manufacturer has no material change statement, it is recommended to request an update.

Direct approachRequest the manufacturer to provide the report number and verify it on the laboratory's official website. A 5-minute process can filter out 90% of paper compliance.

4、 Complete compliance package for export orders

For a complete machine factory exporting to Europe and America, it is recommended to request this set of documents from the LED supplier:

  • RoHS 10 Test Reports (Third Party)
  • REACH SVHC Declaration of Substances of Very High Concern (EU)
  • Halogen Free Declaration (required by some customers)
  • Material Declaration Form (MDS)/Conflict Mineral Declaration (commonly required by North American customers)
  • Delivery Inspection Report (COC) for the corresponding batch

Hongcheng Optoelectronics' full range of lamp beads have passed RoHS 10 third-party testing, and the report number can be verified on the official website, REACH、 The halogen-free declaration is provided with the goods, and the batch COC for export orders is issued according to the customer template.

5 FAQ

Q: Do RoHS reports need to be done for every batch?

It is not necessary to conduct batch by batch full item testing, but the manufacturer is required to conduct batch sampling and keep records; Material/process changes must be retested. The procurement contract can stipulate an annual update of the report.

Q: Do products sold domestically also need RoHS?

China has corresponding "Management Measures for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products" (China RoHS), which requires mandatory labeling. Legitimate LED chips sold domestically should also meet the limit requirements.

Q: Can lead-free lamp beads be soldered using lead technology?

Absolutely possible, downward compatible. On the other hand, the problem lies in the lead-free production line with lead lamp beads - insufficient temperature resistance can cause the lamp to crack and die.

Q: Is RoHS related to light attenuation and reliability?

There is no direct relationship, but there is an indirect correlation: manufacturers who can do stable lead-free high-temperature processes usually have online material and equipment levels, and good reliability is a high probability event.

6、 Summary

Three things about environmental compliance:RoHS 10 reports (number verifiable), lead-free packaging (260 ℃ reflow soldering resistance), export requirements include REACH+halogen-free declaration+batch COCThe four step verification report reveals compliance on paper.

Hongcheng Optoelectronics' full range of LED beads are RoHS/REACH compliant, with lead-free packaging compatible with 260 ℃ reflow soldering. The test report number can be verified, and export orders support customized compliance document packages for customers. Contact information: 139 2571 4318 (same WeChat account), sales@led-hc.com .
