Executive Summary: The Hardest-Working Cheap Component
The power indicator LED on a washing machine, oven or air conditioner may run continuously for 10–15 years. It faces heat, humidity, cleaning chemicals and voltage spikes — yet it is usually one of the cheapest parts on the BOM. Selecting the right appliance status LED is about matching real operating conditions, not just picking the lowest quote.
Brightness: Two Rooms, Opposite Needs
Kitchens are bright; bedrooms are dark. A power LED that reads clearly on a sunlit oven fascia will glare annoyingly on a bedroom air purifier at midnight. Practical solutions: specify mid-range brightness (100–300 mcd) with a diffused lens for general appliances; for bedroom devices, use low-current drive (2–5 mA) or PWM dimming tied to a light sensor. When in doubt, prototype both brightness levels — perceived comfort matters more than datasheet mcd.
Color Coding Conventions
Consumers read colors instinctively: red = hot/fault/heating, green = running/ready, amber = standby/warning, blue = cooling or Wi-Fi connected. Bi-color indicators (red/green in one position) are ideal for appliances with two primary states, saving panel space and tooling cost. Keep colors consistent across your product family — specify wavelength binning so the green on your kettle matches the green on your toaster.
Temperature and Environment
Ovens, coffee makers and hair dryers place indicators near heat sources — verify the part rating (85 °C minimum; 100 °C preferred near heating elements) and keep the LED body away from direct radiant heat. Steam and grease attack epoxy over time; diffused lenses hide surface contamination better than water-clear. For outdoor appliances, UV-resistant encapsulant prevents yellowing.
Electrical Design and Safety
Appliance indicators often connect to mains-derived low-voltage rails (5 V/12 V) — standard practice. For direct mains indication, use properly certified 110 V/220 V indicator assemblies, never a bare LED with a dropper resistor: creepage distances and surge immunity are regulated (IEC 60335 for household appliances). Capacitor-dropper circuits, if used, must come from your power supply design, not improvised at the indicator.
Lifetime and Warranty Math
A continuously-lit indicator at 20 mA in a warm cabinet accumulates 90,000+ hours over ten years — beyond the L70 rating of economy parts. Derating to 10 mA roughly doubles effective life. For always-on indicators, choose suppliers who publish lifespan data at elevated temperature, not just 25 °C.

5 mm and 3 mm through-hole remain the appliance standard — robust, cheap, and the lens doubles as a light guide through the fascia. SMD with light pipes suits premium flat-glass panels. Snap-in panel-mount indicators simplify assembly for metal chassis.
