An automotive LED indicator must survive what no consumer part ever sees: −40 °C cold starts, +105 °C under-hood heat, decades of vibration, load-dump voltage spikes, and warranty liability. Whether for dashboard tell-tales, switch illumination or exterior signal lights, the selection criteria start with qualification standards — not price.
AEC-Q101: The Entry Ticket
AEC-Q101 is the Automotive Electronics Council qualification standard for discrete semiconductors, including LEDs. Qualification covers temperature cycling (−40/+125 °C, 1000 cycles), high-temperature operating life, humidity bias, ESD, and mechanical shock/vibration testing. If your product goes into a vehicle, your Tier-1 or OEM customer will ask for AEC-Q101 documentation — ask your LED supplier for the qualification report before design-in, not after.
Temperature Requirements
Interior indicators (dashboard, switches, infotainment) typically require −40 to +85/105 °C operating range. Under-hood and exterior applications push to +105/+125 °C ambient. At these temperatures, standard epoxy can yellow and brightness decays faster; automotive-grade parts use high-temperature encapsulants and dies derated for sustained heat. Always check the L70 lifespan figure at your actual operating temperature, not at 25 °C.
Vibration and Mechanical Stress
Vehicles vibrate continuously. SMD packages with proper reflow joints outperform through-hole parts under vibration; where through-hole is unavoidable (panel-mount tell-tales), potting or clip retention is standard practice. AEC-Q101 vibration testing (random vibration per MIL-STD profiles) should be confirmed in the supplier's report.
Electrical Environment
The 12 V vehicle rail is hostile: 14.7 V during charging, 24 V jump-start transients on some systems, and load-dump spikes far higher. Built-in resistor LED indicators rated for automotive rails must be sized for worst-case 16 V continuous. Reverse polarity protection matters too — a backwards-installed indicator should survive, not die.
Color and Brightness Standards
Tell-tale colors follow convention and regulation: red for warnings requiring immediate action, amber/yellow for caution, green/blue for status. Daylight readability demands high-brightness dies with narrow viewing angles or light-pipe designs; night driving demands dimming — specify parts whose brightness scales linearly with PWM for dashboard illumination curves.
Motorcycle and EV Applications
Two-wheelers and EVs add their own twists: turn signals and projection lamps (a growing Hongcheng product line) require wide temperature range plus water/dust ingress protection, typically IP65+ at the assembly level.
